Kane: 'Get the job done'

After a goal-laden September, England striker targets World Cup and familiar foes

Tuesday 03 Oct 2017

To say it’s been a productive month for Harry Kane would be an understatement.

The England and Tottenham Hotspur striker has been in red hot form with both club and country during September and he’s now aiming to keep that form going into the new month.

It all started with his brace against Malta for the Three Lions last month, before returning to Spurs and firing eleven goals in six games to prompt comparisons with some of the best players in the world.

Kane isn’t entertaining that sort of speculation though, maintaining the same focus and determination to improve which has seen him consistently scoring goals for England since his early days with the U17s and through to the seniors.

“It’s been a good month for me, starting obviously last time with England when it was nice to get a couple of goals to kick-start the calendar month,” he told TheFA.com.

“Hopefully I can do the same again this month, that’s all I try to do, help the team out by scoring goals and just keep improving.

“If I can keep getting better every day and every week, that’s the main thing and what I want to keep doing really.”

Kane’s rise to prominence has been well documented and the 24-year-old still scratches his head when reminded that it’s just over three years ago that he was part of Gareth Southgate’s U21s squad and patiently waiting for a chance in the starting line-up with Saido Berahino and Danny Ings for competition.

With Lithuania in opposition for the Three Lions on Sunday in the final World Cup qualifier, it’s ironic that Kane scored a crucial winner for the U21s in September 2014 against the same opposition in Kaunas.

Within a matter of weeks, he’d forced his way into the Spurs line-up and a goal-trail began which is still running to this day.

“I can barely remember that goal, but time’s gone so quick for me,” he admits.

“I still recall going away with the U21s, fighting for a spot in that team and just waiting for a chance and then all of a sudden it kicked-off with Spurs and I made my debut for the seniors later that season.

“Ironically, that was against Lithuania too and I scored then so it’s strange how it comes around. But that’s football, it changes so quickly and you’ve just got to go with it and that’s what I’ve done.

“I’ve worked so hard over the years and I’m working even harder now to maintain it.”

Kane and his team-mates will leave their St. George’s Park base on Tuesday evening ahead of Thursday’s game with Slovenia at Wembley, when a win will be enough to confirm England’s place at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

And should they seal their spot in the finals, that will be another of Kane’s bucket list complete.

“We’re looking to do it on Thursday, we want to win that game and qualify for Russia next year,” he adds.

“That’s always been the aim, we’ve just got to finish it off now and win both games.

“People are expecting us to win both games, so we’ll have that mentality, stay focused and get the job done.

“Growing up watching the World Cup, I’ve always wanted to be a part of it so hopefully we can get the job done and look forward to next year.

“In the world, it’s one that everyone looks forward to, all of the best players in the world, so to be a part of it would be amazing.”

Tickets for Thursday's game are available, priced from £20 for adults and £10 for kids. Click here for more details or to purchase.
