Aidy Boothroyd was happy with a point in the Netherlands - but his players weren't

Aidy Boothroyd revealed his side were left “devastated” at only picking up a point in their opening U21 Euro qualifier with the Netherlands.

The Young Lions boss saw his side draw 1-1 with the Dutch, after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s opener was cancelled out by Bart Ramselar’s equaliser on Friday evening.

And even though Boothroyd admits he was happy to take a point from the game, his players felt otherwise.

“They’re all devastated in there, which is ridiculous isn’t it?” he said.

“They expect to win all the time. To come to a place like this, I think it’s a solid point.

“I was a bit concerned before the game. I was thinking ‘they’re world champions and everyone tries to up their game for it.’

“They were disappointed. I think we tried to force the win and they are games you can get caught out in.

“Considering it’s a new team and we were playing one of the better teams in the group, it’s a solid start but obviously you want to win every game.”

England will have another chance to get their first win of the qualifying group on Tuesday, when they face Latvia at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium. Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for concessions. Click here for more details.
