England’s CP World Championship title dreams were brought to an end on Wednesday after they suffered a 3-1 semi-final defeat to Iran.
After breezing through their group stage and then seeing off USA in the quarter final earlier this week, Andy Smith’s side had built up their momentum for the last-four clash.
But they came unstuck against an impressive Iranian outfit in San Luis, going two goals behind early in the first half before Dave Porcher reduced the arrears going into the break.
Despite a strong second-half performance in which the Three Lions tested their opponents, it was another early goal which settled the scoreline in Iran’s favour.
The tournament isn’t over for England though, as they will contest a play-off for third place against Russia on Saturday evening (6pm BST).
