Sam Morsy, Dan Burn and Callum Elder struck as Wigan Athletic pulled off one of the shocks of the 2017-18 Emirates FA Cup so far.
Paul Cook’s League One leaders, who lifted the world’s original cup competition with a 1-0 win over Manchester City in the 2012-13 season, headlined the final batch of third round replays as they claimed the scalp of Premier League Bournemouth, humbling the Cherries 3-0 at the DW Stadium.
Meanwhile, nine-man Chelsea were pushed all the way by Norwich City but held their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
At the DW, Wigan took an early lead through skipper Morsy’s third goal of the season, the Egyptian international keeping his composure to slot an effort into the bottom corner after Artur Boruc had knocked away a Will Grigg effort.
The Latics continued to keep the Cherries at bay and then fired themselves into dreamland with two further goals in the space of three second-half minutes.
First, defender Dan Burn volleyed home from a Max Power delivery to make it 2-0 and then Cook’s troops found themselves three goals to the good, Callum Elder heading into the net at the far post.
Wigan’s just reward is a home tie against West Ham United in the fourth round on January 27.
Meanwhile, last season’s beaten Emirates FA Cup finalists Chelsea had both Pedro and Alvaro Morata sent off but got the better of Norwich from 12 yards in west London.
Both sides rattled the crossbars at either end of Stamford Bridge in the first period, Blues midfielder Danny Drinkwater smacking a long-range effort against the woodwork while Nelson Oliveira struck the frame of the Chelsea goal from the edge of the box.
With the initial tie drawn 0-0, the deadlock was finally broken with 55 minutes on the clock, striker Batshuayi sweeping an effort high into the net from a Kenedy cross.
Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero had to be at his best to keep out an effort from the Canaries’ James Maddison whilst Blues substitute Morata
But then, in the final second of added time, Tim Klose’s cross into the box was met by Lewis’ superb deft header, the Norwich teenager looping the ball over Caballero to force extra time.
Late in the second additional period, Chelsea’s Pedro was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Wes Hoolahan and then, striker Morata picked up two bookings in quick succession – firstly for going down in the area under the attentions of Christoph Zimmermann and then for dissent as he argued with referee Graham Scott.
The tie was decided in a penalty shoot-out, with Caballero’s save from Oliveira proving decisive as Willian, David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta, N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard all dispatching their kicks to send the Blues through.
In the third and final replay of the night, Swansea City also progressed into the fourth round by besting Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1.
Jordan Ayew calmed Swansea nerves with a virtuoso opener just 11 minutes in, the Ghanaian forward dancing his way past five opponents before lashing home past keeper Will Norris.
Nuno’s Championship title-chasers got themselves back on level terms with 66 minutes on the clock, Diogo Jota jinking into the area and squeezing a shot past Kristoffer Nordfeldt to restore parity.
But in the flash of an eye, Carlos Cavalhal’s troops grabbed a winner courtesy of Wilfried Bony, who reacted quickest to poke home after the visitors had failed to deal with a Tom Carroll delivery.
