Kieran Trippier was the coolest man in Moscow when he stepped up to score in England’s penalty shoot-out victory over Colombia.
With the Three Lions trailing 3-2 in the shoot-out, the Tottenham Hotspur right-back’s spot-kick brought things level before Jordan Pickford saved Carlos Bacca’s penalty to set up his Spurs team-mate Eric Dier with the chance to send the squad into the quarter final.
And the former Burnley man revealed England’s first-ever shoot-out win in a senior World Cup was honed during the hours of work in training in the build up to the competition in Russia.
"We have some great penalty takers and we've practised, practised and practised in training,” revealed Trippier, after the game.
"There's always going to be a penalty shoot-out in tournaments like this, I know that from watching over the years, so it's just about practising after every session on the training field and we've done that.
"When the lads are fatigued after tough sessions, we've still done that and the lads have been scoring some brilliant penalties and I'm delighted for Pickers too.”
Trippier was also happy with the team’s performance on the night, as Harry Kane gave England a deserved lead in the second half only for Colombia to conjure up an unlikely equaliser from the head of Yerry Mina in added time.
"I thought we played really well in the first half and for their goal, personally, I thought it was a mistake by myself,” he admitted.
"I thought he was going to head it directly in, but when I took a little jump and it went into the ground and I couldn't adjust my body so I was gutted.
"I say it all the time though, with the spirit of the team, we carried on how we were playing and didn't change anything and we believed.”
