England missed out on a place at the FIFA Women’s U17s World Cup after a narrow 2-1 defeat by Finland.

John Griffiths’s side were competing in the third-place play-off at the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship finals and a win would have taken them to Uruguay 2018.

And they got off to the ideal start when Manchester City’s Jess Park put them ahead after 12 minutes.

But Annika Huhta levelled six minutes into the second half and Jenni Kantanen bagged what turned out to be the winner just after the hour mark.

The Young Lionesses had come through the group stage by beating Italy and drawing with Poland either side of a loss to Spain, who face Germany, England’s nemesis in the last-four, in the Final.
