Commuters get chance to test penalties at London's Victoria Station with Just Play

To commemorate the 36th anniversary of the first England Women’s international, we teamed up with long-standing partners Mars to offer commuters at  Victoria Station a chance to test their penalty-taking skills. Lionesses legend Fara Williams was joined by our director of the women’s game, Kelly Simmons, to mark the latest milestone in the Mars Just Play programme. More than one million adults have now taken part in recreational football sessions through the scheme since it began in 2011. They were joined at the station by people who have benefited from Just Play themselves, including a lunchtime football group from Gloucestershire. Jack Stanbury from the Gloucestershire FA explains how it all came about…

People had a chance to practise their penalty kicks at London Victoria station this week

There’s a huge business park, Aztec West, just down the road from our headquarters at Oaklands Park in Bristol and another in Bradley Stoke which is less than a mile away.

It’s about giving those people an opportunity to play football. We did a bit of research and found that often people just can’t commit to weekends.

A lot of these people live a little way away, with us being near the motorway, and travel a long way to come to work.

Now, we have up to 50 people here for Mars Just Play sessions every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

It kind of happened naturally. In the Aztec West business park, they’ve got a couple of shops and cafes and the companies do speak to each other.

We’ve still only touched the surface with the amount of businesses who are there so provided we can get the word out to more companies, I think we’d probably be able to run one every day.

We used to only run two a week and now we’ve moved it up to three. We’ve developed a business league on the side as well – a seven-a-side monthly competition.

If we can get more companies involved, it would be a no-brainer for us to run more sessions.
