A first visit to Mickleover as Paul Taylor continues his Road to Wembley

There was another trip to Anstey Nomads for Paul Taylor and his dad

Paul Taylor and his dad Pete continued their inaugural Road to Wembley with another trip to Anstey Nomads in the Emirates FA Cup second round qualifying last month - and now they are off to Mickleover.

The intrepid father and son duo saw eight goals at Davidson Homes Park – and arranged to go for a pint with a Sky Sports commentator!

Paul picks up the story...

He said: “The second round qualifying again saw us on the road to Leicestershire to watch the tie between Anstey Nomads and Mickleover Sports. With my brother-in-law Andy working in Germany, it was me and my old man holding the fort for this leg of our Road to Wembley.

“Google Maps decided on a different route this time so we had the fun of going through average speed cameras for half the journey down the M1! Thankfully we still made it in time for a pre-match pint and to catch the end of the early Sky Sports game, as is becoming tradition!

“Thank God I had my parka on as the rain really came down in the first half. Unfortunately, my dad came unprepared and the rain dripped straight out of the gutter on the roof of the stand onto his head!

“It was nice to see a few former Football League players, Pablo Mills – a mountain of a man – coming on and Clinton Morrison in attendance.

“And a mention to Mickleover’s player-manager John McGrath, a resident in our hometown of Doncaster and former Doncaster, Burton and Aston Villa player who had a decent game in the middle of the park.

Action from Davidson Homes Park

“Anstey fought well and were right in it at 2-1 until the last 20 minutes when suddenly five unanswered goals meant the full-time result was 7-1 to Mickleover. There was a great hat-trick, including a worldy from the Mickleover front man.

“After the game I was contacted on Twitter by one of the main commentators for Sky Sports Darts who, funnily enough, is on the same Road to Wembley with his friends as we are, so we’re looking forward to catching up for a pint in another round.

“So it’s off to Mickleover next as they host Alfreton Town in the third round qualifying in what should be another good Cup tie and another previously unvisited ground.

“I’m looking forward to having Andy, his dad Pete and my young nephew Harry back with us again.”
