Hartlepool United join AFC Fylde as the only two non-League teams definitely through to the Emirates FA Cup third round after their dramatic extra-time win over Exeter City on Tuesday night.
Josh Hawkes scored the only goal of the game three minutes into extra time as National League Pools downed their League Two opponents to set up a third-round trip to Oxford United.
It was a night to forget for the Grecians who also had Jack Sparkes sent off in extra time and failed to find a leveller.
Meanwhile in the battle of the former FA Cup champions, Coventry City – winners back in 1987 – knocked out Ipswich Town – the 1978 victors.
Jordan Shipley and Max Biamou notched in the first half for the Sky Blues and they held on to book a match-up in the third round with either Bristol Rovers or Plymouth.
The Tractor Boys – flying high in League One – did pull a goal back late on when Luke Garbutt scored but it wasn't enough.
Elsewhere, Chuma Anene climbed off the bench to bag a brace and book Crewe Alexandra’s passage into the third round at the expense of Eastleigh.
Anene was introduced in the first half for an injured Chris Porter and notched twice – either side of a Reda Johnson own goal – to put the hosts in total control at Gresty Road.
Marcus Barnes scored a late consolation for Eastleigh but the Railwaymen are into the third round and will welcome Barnsley in the new year.
Finally, Carlisle United saw off Forest Green Rovers thanks to Aaron Hayden’s first-half header.
The Cumbrians were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw in the first meeting but held on to book a meeting with Championship side Cardiff in the third round.
