Rochdale's Aaron Wilbraham is mobbed after scoring the equaliser against Newcastle United

When 40-year-old Aaron Wilbraham tucked home an Emirates FA Cup equaliser for Rochdale against Newcastle United, he sent Spotland crazy at the prospect of a trip to St James' Park.

And when the final whistle blew with the score tied at 1-1, it was confirmed - the Dale were heading north to Newcastle.

In the aftermath, much has been made of the manner in which the goal came about as the assist was supplied by a player 23 years his junior in Luke Matheson.

England U18 right-back Matheson hit the headlines himself back in September when he scored an equaliser at Old Trafford in Dale's EFL Cup tie with Manchester United at just 16 years old.

And former Stockport County, MK Dons, Crystal Palace and Bristol City man, who has now scored in four different decades, had some kind words for his young apprentice when he joined the Emirates FA Cup Show live.

"Luke's a great player, he's already scored at Old Trafford this season and got the assist to get us a game against Newcastle too," said Abraham.

"He's only three years older than my daughter so it's mad - I'm the same age as most of the players' parents so I have to be that father figure from time-to-time but I don't mind."

The winners of the replay, which is scheduled for the week commencing 13 January, will face a visit from Oxford United in the fourth round - not the draw which the Manchester City fan was hoping for.

But the striker will be doing everything in his powers to repeat his third-round heroics, knowing exactly what it means to all those involved with the League One club.

"When you see that ball hit the back of the net, it's the best feeling in the world," added Abraham.

"It was a massive moment for the boys to get the replay and the chance to travel up to St James' Park and I know all the fans and players are looking forward to it."
