Our Lionhearts skipper, Captain Sir Tom Moore has sent his support to the former England players who also served for their country’s Armed Forces on Remembrance Sunday.
England’s lockdown hero, Captain Sir Tom raised £38 million for NHS charities earlier this year after embarking on a remarkable walking challenge by doing 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, unwittingly becoming the face of hope in what was a dark time.
Captain Sir Tom duly became the first member of our own Lionhearts squad, a collection of 23 heroes who we’ve recognised for their achievements away from the football pitch in what has been a tough year for everyone.
"Remembrance is an incredibly important and special day," said Captain Sir Tom.
"So I respectfully ask that we all take the time to stop, think and be thankful that were it not for the ultimate sacrifices made all those years ago by such a brave band of men and women we would not be enjoying the freedoms we have today, even in these current difficult times.
"Let’s stand shoulder-to-shoulder (metaphorically) with our teammates and take a moment to quietly reflect.
"Together we are stronger. Together we can achieve so much and ensure that tomorrow will be a good day."
Meanwhile, as the country enters a second national lockdown, The Captain Tom Foundation has now launched a new initiative encouraging everyone to #WalkWithTom.
Its mission is to get as many people as possible walking and talking, spreading hope and easing loneliness after the family have been inundated with requests for support.
Their desire is that Walk with Tom will unite the nation, ensuring we can face the next few weeks together.
“I would like us all to stand shoulder to shoulder (metaphorically!). Let’s try not to get downhearted, we will get through this, whatever is thrown at us and together we can ensure that tomorrow will be a good day,” added Captain Sir Tom.
The initiative encourages those of all ages, geographies and persuasion to take action. People can walk to keep their mind happy, walk and give someone a call.
Walk to their shielding friend’s house and drop off a little something on the doorstep, or even just talk – at a distance of course.
