As Black History Month drew to a close in October, we welcomed over 300 guests to Wembley Stadium for the production of ‘Still We Roar’ on Thursday 26 October.
The 40-minute theatre show told the inspirational story of three pioneering Black female players in the game, Kerry Davis, England women’s first Black player; Hope Powell, England’s first female and Black manager; and Mary Phillip, England women’s first Black captain.
Written by Naomi Denny and directed by Rasheka Christie-Carter, the production followed the tale of how their paths have crossed many times, most notably at the Women’s World Cup in Sweden in 1995, where the play was set.
The show was followed by a live Q&A with Kerry, Hope and Mary, with local community groups, former professional players, coaches and people working across the game in attendance.
