The FA, PFA and Nottingham Trent University held a brain health symposium this week

Thursday 10 Apr 2025

The FA, together with the Professional Footballers’ Association and Nottingham Trent University, hosted a football brain health research symposium at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus on Wednesday 9 April.

The event provided a forum of panel discussions and sessions for those who are involved in the study of brain health within football.

It also gave an opportunity for researchers to knowledge-share from their own research, as well create partnerships and links on how they can work together to highlight other areas of the topic and allow the game to continue to keep abreast of developments in the area of brain health.

Among the panel who attended to discuss such matters in the subject were: Professor Dan Daneshvar (Harvard University), Dr Margot Putukian (MLS), Professor Willie Stewart (Queen Elizabeth University, Glasgow), Professor Evert Verhagen (UEFA), Dr Richard Sylvester (University College London Hospitals).

"We are thrilled that a large number of very significant researchers in this field were able to attend the symposium," said our chief medical officer, Dr Charlotte Cowie.

"The quality of the presentations, which covered a wide range including medical science, engineering and social science were of an exceptionally high standard, as was the discussion in the room.

"We are grateful to all who attended and have received very positive early feedback."
