Rolando Aarons still pinching himself after 'dream' week

Saturday 06 Sep 2014

England debutant Rolando Aarons says he is still pinching himself after a "crazy" week.

In the past six days the Newcastle United forward has scored his first goal in the Premier League and netted on his international debut for The U20s.

“You can’t really ask for much more than that,” he said after England’s resounding 6-0 victory against Romania in Telford on Friday night.

“I’m just honoured to be involved and thrilled to have got a goal on my England debut.”

Aarons came on as a second-half substitute for Newcastle during their home fixture against Crystal Palace last weekend.

With the Magpies trailing 2-1 at the time, Aarons’ introduction proved pivotal as he scored one and created another.

The youngster continued his fine run of form with a star performance on his Young Lions bow as he bagged one and created a further two in the rout of Romania.

And the former Bristol City youth player said he is now reaping the benefits of a summer of dedication.

“This summer I really worked hard. I didn’t go on holiday,” he added.

“I stayed where I was and did a lot of work with a conditioning coach who is also my friend as well.

“It’s really helped me so far this season, I feel so much stronger and fitter – and it’s obviously paying off now.

“I feel so much better and quicker than I did this time a year ago, and it’s the work I did in the off-season that’s allowing me to be doing what I’m doing now.

“It’s been an amazing week. The boys made me feel very welcome from the first day and I was part of the group straight away.

“Now I am looking forward to going back to my club, trying my best to make the squad next week and hopefully impact the game like I did last weekend.”

And the 18-year-old does not have long to wait. Next up for Newcastle is a trip to Southampton on 13 September.
