But the Young Lions were dealt a blow two minutes later when Greece forward Lamprou struck to level things up.
England had been frustrated in the first half of a scrappy game, with both Armstrong and Izzy Brown coming close only to be denied by Greek keeper Astras or off target.
The breakthrough came just four minutes after the restart when Coventry City hitman Armstrong was tripped in the area to earn England the penalty, which he dispatched himself.
But it wasn’t to be for England, with both sides pushing for a winner in the later stages and substitute Tammy Abraham coming closest in the 87th minute.
The result means it will be go down to the last game with Spain on Tuesday, with Boothroyd’s side knowing they need to beat their hosts in order to progress to July’s Euro Finals in Germany with the sides level on points but Spain enjoying a single goal difference advantage.
