The Black Cats hitman has scored five goals in four games for Gus Poyet’s side to give them a fighting chance of Premier League survival.
Wickham, 21, had impressed during loan spells in the Championship with both Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United earlier this season, before being recalled to the Stadium of Light in late March.

And since then he has scored in Sunderland’s games against Chelsea, Manchester City and Cardiff City to help them complete a haul of seven points and remain in contention for a place in the top flight next term.
"I’m delighted to receive the award and it means so much to me,” said the former Ipswich Town striker, who has represented England at U16s, U17s, U19s and Under-21 level.
"We’ve picked up some great points in recent weeks and we need to keep going."
Wickham, who has not featured for England since the 6-0 win over Scotland last August, will now be hoping his end-of-season form will be enough to see him picked in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the trip to Wales and the Toulon Tournament later this month.
He is certainly not a stranger to awards, having been previously named as UEFA's Golden Player after helping England U17s lift the European Championship in 2010.
