A trip down memory lane of a past Denmark encounter

Sunday 19 Jan 2014
Robson's eight-year reign began against Denmark
Ron Greenwood retired after the Spain World Cup in 1982 and his successor, Bobby Robson, began his period in charge with a European Championship Qualifier in Denmark in the following September.

Again playing in the Idraetspark, England had to be content with a 2-2 draw after conceding an equaliser in the last seconds.

Denmark were emerging as an exciting and skilful side and England faced a tough start to the campaign.

They made an encouraging start, Rasmussen saving well from a Graham Rix volley before Trevor Francis prodded them in front on seven minutes.

England 2-2 Denmark

  • Date: 22 September 1982
  • Location: Idraetspark, Copenhagen
  • England XI: Shilton, Sansom, Neal, Butcher, Osman, Wilkins, Rix, Robson, Mariner, Francis, Morley.
  • Attendance: 44,300

The Danes dominated for the rest of the half but England kept them out, despite a good shout for a penalty as Russell Osman tangled with Elkjaer.

The home side finally broke through on 69 minutes, Hansen converting a spot-kick after Osman brought down Olsen. There were no arguments this time.

Then, against the run of play, England went ahead again. Ray Wilkins, skipper in his 50th appearance and playing with great composure, took a corner that dropped to Francis and the Sampdoria striker stabbed the ball home with a half-volley.

An England victory after Denmark had had so much of the play would have been unfair but justice was done when Olsen dribbled past several defenders before sliding a very late winner past Peter Shilton.

Robson’s England won their next two qualifiers, scoring 12 goals, but defeat to the Danes in the Wembley return proved to be crucial.

As they continue their preparation for the World Cup, England welcome Denmark to the new Wembley for the first time on Wednesday 5 March.
