Stephen passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning

The FA is saddened to hear of the passing of fundraiser Stephen Sutton, whose long battle with cancer ended on Wednesday morning.

General secretary Alex Horne said: “On behalf of The Football Association, my deepest condolences go to Stephen’s family and friends.

"I know he touched the lives of many here in England and around the world, particularly with his incredible fundraising and positive spirit. To achieve all he did, even when extremely unwell, is testament to Stephen’s remarkable character. He was a true inspiration.

“Staff here at Wembley and St. George’s Park chose Teenage Cancer Trust as The FA’s charity partner in December 2012.

Steven Gerrard and Stephen met in February 2013

"Some of them met Stephen when he came to Wembley last year to watch England v Brazil, and I know they were inspired to raise as much money as they could for such an important charity that gives amazing support for young people living through cancer. Stephen will be much missed.”

Stephen, who was only 19 and was diagnosed with inoperable bowel cancer four years ago, raised over £3.2m for the Teenage Cancer Trust after news of his campaign spread across social media.

He set out to raise £10,000 for charity, but eclipsed all his targets after his positive attitude attracted attention and admiration from millions across the world.

To help motivate himself and allow him to "enjoy life" to the full he also created a bucket list featuring a number of things he wanted to accomplish - and as part of that he was invited to Wembley Stadium to meet the England team after their friendly against Brazil in 2013.

“He's an inspiration, and my thoughts are with his family at this sad time”

And England captain Steven Gerrard also added his own tribute.

He said: “I was fortunate enough to meet Stephen at Wembley when he came to an England game last year, he’s a huge fan and his enthusiasm was amazing.

“What he has done has been incredible, raising funds that will make an enormous difference to so many people.

“A young lad with such bravery, facing up to adversity by showing complete selflessness. He's an inspiration, and my thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
