Dael's Riverside return

Middlesbrough ace can't wait to run out on home turf for England's game with Scotland

Friday 06 Oct 2017

Dael Fry could fulfill another childhood dream on Friday when England U21s host Scotland in his hometown.

The Young Lions face the Auld Enemy at the Riverside Stadium and the Middlesbrough man is hoping to be involved.

And the 20-year-old admits he won’t be short of support on Teesside with plenty of family and friends getting in touch to ask for tickets.

“Representing England at any level is unbelievable but to get the chance to do it in my hometown will be something special,” he told the official England match programme.

“I’ll have everyone close to me there, and I know the Boro fans love a bit of England too, so to play in front of those people I grew up with for my country will be something else.

“I’ve seen a few Boro players in the past do this, I remember Ben Gibson doing it [against Germany in March 2015], and I just can’t wait to hopefully get my chance.

“Any England versus Scotland game is huge, and for me to be able to be involved in one in my hometown, it’s like a dream come true.”

It’s already been a memorable year for Fry, who won the U20 World Cup with many of his current U21 squad-mates in June before starting the new season in the Boro first team.

Fry, who also won the U17 Euro title with the Young Lions back in 2014, believes Aidy Boothroyd’s team are ready for Friday’s challenge too, after kicking off their new campaign with a draw against the Dutch and a win over Latvia last month.

“When we meet up for the U21s, you can see the talent straight away,” he added.

“The togetherness is still there and I think it always will be between us. It’s hard to explain the bond we have developed over the years and it feels like a club side. We work so hard for each other.

“It’s matches like this that are the reason you get into football and we need to make sure we do everything we can to get the result.

“I’m just delighted to be playing for England with the U21s, I think my performances at the World Cup helped to get me here and into the Middlesbrough team.

“I’m really grateful for Garry Monk putting his trust in me at Boro and I’m really enjoying my football at the moment.

“But I know I can’t let my standards drop for club or country because there are players ready to take my spot.”
