Phil Neville wants more players to stake their claim for a place in his England Women’s squad.
The Lionesses head coach has used just 25 players in his five matches in charge.
Although that included a debut for Chelsea defender Hannah Blundell, the 41-year-old would like a larger group of players to choose from as he chases a place at next summer’s World Cup finals.
He said: “There [are] about 30 players in that pool now but I’d prefer it to be around 40, I’d be more comfortable with that.
“I want to widen the pool. In the past, England players have maybe had the comfort of knowing what the next squad is going to be before it’s announced but I’d like there to be more uncertainty.
“More competition for places means the standard goes up.”
And Neville believes the restructuring of the women’s league pyramid will help him identify more players capable of pulling on the Three Lions.
“I can consider Championship players for the World Cup,” he said. “I will go to Championship games next season and judge players on an individual basis.
“I don’t judge players on whether they’re in the best WSL teams. I see them as individuals. I judge them on concentration, intensity and quality on the ball.
“The pool of possible internationals good enough to get into my squad will grow.”
England are in Moscow preparing for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Russia, a team they defeated 6-0 at Prenton Park in September.
The Lionesses are top of Group 1, two points clear of second-placed Wales with just three matches remaining.
Neville’s squad are second in the FIFA rankings, their highest-ever position, behind only world champions USA.
“People make a big thing about rankings,” he said, “but being first or second in the world doesn’t mean much if you don’t actually win anything.
“Rankings aren’t that important to me. I want a winners’ medal.
“I’ve got to say the last five months have seemed like three days,” continued Neville, who was appointed head coach in January.
“I’ve loved every minute. The girls are incredible. I feel blessed and inspired every day.”
