England U20s slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Poland at St. George's Park on Thursday afternoon.
The Young Lions, playing their first of two games this month, were caught out by an impressive early charge from the Poles, who stormed into a 2-0 lead at half time thanks to a seventh minute strike from Jakub Moder and then Patryk Klimala's penalty.
And when Mikolaj Kwietniewski made it 3-0 shortly after the re-start, Paul Simpson's side had left themselves with too much to do.
But they gave themselves hope just before the hour mark when Eddie Nketiah pulled a goal back, after a cross from Tom Pearce on the left.
Simpson and his squad now head to Portugal for their next game on Tuesday with a few changes to the group.
Trevoh Chalobah, Elliot Embleton and Tom Edwards have all withdrawn through injury, with Morgan Feeney (Everton) and Dujon Sterling (Coventry City, loan from Chelsea) linking up with the squad.
