Villa Park will be the stage for our final international ahead of UEFA EURO 2020.
The Three Lions will welcome Romania on Sunday 7 June (6.15pm), a week before this summer’s tournament gets underway against Croatia at Wembley Stadium.
Birmingham becomes the latest on-the-road destination for our England senior men’s squad, after visits to Manchester, Sunderland, Leeds, Leicester and Southampton in recent years.
And for England manager Gareth Southgate, it’s a return to a venue where he spent six years as a player with Aston Villa.
It was where he first broke into the Three Lions squad, captained the team and made almost 200 appearances as well as lifting the League Cup title in 1996.
The famous stadium has hosted our senior team on nine previous occasions, with the last of those being a 0-0 draw with the Netherlands in February 2005, as well as the MU21s also playing Wales there in 2008 in an U21 EURO play-off which ended 2-2.
June’s fixture will be the 12th meeting with Romania, who are hoping to secure their place as fellow hosts at UEFA EURO 2020 via the play-offs in March.
The Three Lions will assemble in Southampton next month to prepare for two Wembley fixtures against Italy on Friday 27 March (8pm) - the Heads Up International in support of our charitable partnership with HRH The Duke of Cambridge’s Heads Together initiative - and Denmark on Tuesday 31 March (8pm).
Preparations will continue at the end of the 2019-20 season with an away fixture against Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on Tuesday 2 June (7.45pm) before Romania come to Villa Park.
Following last November’s draw in Bucharest, England know they will face Croatia and Czech Republic in Group D at UEFA EURO 2020 as well as the winner of the play-off path featuring Scotland, Israel, Norway and Serbia.
All three fixtures will be played at Wembley with dates set for Sunday 14 June (2pm, v Croatia), Friday 19 June (8pm, v TBC) and Tuesday 23 June (8pm, v Czech Republic).
