Peterborough United v Manchester City
7.15pm, Tuesday 1 March 2022
London Road
Live on ITV
● Peterborough United and Manchester City have met just once before in all competitions, a clash which also came in the fifth round of the FA Cup in February 1981, and ended in a 1-0 victory for the Citizens away from home.
● Manchester City have won each of their last eleven FA Cup matches against sides from a lower division, netting 40 goals (and at least three times in ten of those) and conceding just eight goals themselves.
● Three of Peterborough’s previous four FA Cup ties at the fifth round stage have gone to a replay – in 1964-65, 1974-75 and 1985-86 – with the only one not going to a replay a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in 1981. The Posh’s only appearance at the quarter-final stage was back in 1965.
● Only Manchester United (5) have reached the FA Cup quarter-finals more often than Manchester City (4) since Pep Guardiola came to the club in 2016, with round five the earliest exit they have suffered under the Spaniard – losing at Wigan in 2017-18.
● Ricky-Jade Jones has scored in three of his four FA Cup appearances for Peterborough. All of these appearances have been as a substitute, meaning he averages a goal once every 26 minutes in the competition (79 minutes played).
● Kevin De Bruyne has assisted three FA Cup goals in his two appearances this season, with only Nathanael Ogebta (4 – all for Shrewsbury) registering more. Since his debut in the competition for Manchester City in 2015-16, the only Premier League players with more FA Cup assists than the Belgian (8) are Anthony Martial (10) and Son Heung-min (11).
Crystal Palace v Stoke City
7.30pm, Tuesday 1 March 2022
Selhurst Park
Live on BBC Red Button
● Crystal Palace have won eight of their last ten matches with Stoke in all competitions (D1 L1) including seven of the last eight. Surprisingly however, the Eagles have only kept two clean sheets across those ten matches.
● Stoke last played Crystal Palace in the FA Cup in a fourth round tie in 2015-16, a 1-0 defeat away from home. However, they had progressed from the two other ties with the Eagles in 1988-89 and 2012-13.
● Crystal Palace last reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2018-19, actually progressing from each of their last two round five ties (also in 2015-16).
● Stoke haven’t appeared in the final eight of the FA Cup since 2011-12, when they lost to Liverpool at Anfield. They’ve only won two of their last ten away games in the competition (D2 L6).
● Michael Olise has both scored and assisted in his last two FA Cup matches, with no player in this season’s competition having a direct hand in more goals than the Crystal Palace winger so far (4).
● Stoke’s Tyrese Campbell has been involved in five goals in his five appearances in the FA Cup (three goals, two assists), averaging a goal or assist once every 54 minutes in the competition.
Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur
7.55pm, Tuesday 1 March 2022
Riverside Stadium
Live on BBC One
● Middlesbrough have only won one of their last 13 meetings with Spurs in all competitions (D4 L8), a 2-1 win on the opening day of the 2008-09 Premier League season. This sequence of results includes an FA Cup round three tie in 2019-20, which ultimately ended in a Spurs win in a replay.
● Including replays, Tottenham have never lost to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup (W4 D2), though those two draws have come as the away side in February 1905 and January 2020.
● As a side outside of the English top-flight, Middlesbrough are looking to eliminate multiple top-tier opponents in the same FA Cup campaign for the first time since 1991-92 (Man City and Sheffield Wednesday), when they eventually lost in round five to Portsmouth following a replay.
● Spurs haven’t reached the FA Cup quarter-finals since 2017-18, going on to reach the final four of the competition in each of the last four seasons they have done so. However, they have been knocked out at this stage in their last two campaigns v Norwich (2019-20) and Everton last season.
● As a top-flight manager, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has lost only one of his eleven domestic cup matches against sides from a lower division (W8 D2), only losing in what was his first ever such match when in charge of Atalanta in November 2009 – a 1-0 defeat to Lumezzane in the Coppa Italia fourth round.
● In 24 previous FA Cup matches, Tottenham’s Harry Kane has netted 16 times, which since his debut for Millwall in the competition in January 2012, is bettered only by Sergio Aguero (20). Indeed, the England captain has scored 13 times in his last 12 appearances in the competition.
Luton Town v Chelsea
7.15pm Wednesday 2 March 2022
Kenilworth Road
Live on BBC One
● Luton and Chelsea are meeting in the FA Cup for the second consecutive season, with the Blues running out 3-1 winners in round four at Stamford Bridge last season. The sides last met this far into the competition back in 1993-94, when a Gavin Peacock brace secured a 2-0 win for Chelsea at Wembley in the semi-final.
● Luton have won four of their last five home matches against Chelsea (L1) – all in the top-flight – keeping a clean sheet in each victory between 1987 and, most recently, 1991. The Blues have only won one of their last 13 away games versus the Hatters (D5 L7).
● Luton, who have lost eight of their last 11 FA Cup matches against top-flight sides (W1 D2), are looking to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 1993-94, when they lost to Chelsea at the semi-final stage.
● Since overcoming Norwich on penalties in round three in 2017-18, Chelsea have won 19 of their 22 FA Cup games (L3), more than any other side. The Blues were last eliminated by lower league opposition this far into the competition in 2007-08, a 1-0 defeat to Championship Barnsley at Oakwell in the quarter-final.
● Between them, Luton and Chelsea have netted 14 FA Cup goals this season, with each side having seven different players net for them in the competition exactly once. However, none of those 14 players were on the scoresheet in this fixture last season, when Tammy Abraham scored a hat-trick for the Blues and Jordan Clark pulled one back for the Hatters.
● Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku’s first FA Cup goal was back in March 2014, in a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal while he was at Everton. Since (and including) that game, only Kelechi Iheanacho (15) has scored more goals in the competition proper than the Belgian (14).
Southampton v West Ham United
7.30pm, Wednesday 2 March 2022
St. Mary's Stadium
Live on BBC Red Button
● This will be the third meeting of the season between Southampton and West Ham, with Saints remaining unbeaten in the two Premier League fixtures between the sides (W1 D1). Prior to their 3-2 away win on Boxing Day, Southampton were winless in eight matches with the Hammers (D2 L6).
● West Ham have never lost to Southampton in the FA Cup, winning three and drawing three of their six meetings. The Hammers progressed past Southampton in 1919-20 (round one), 1922-23 (quarter-final) and 1974-75 (round three).
● Southampton are unbeaten in their last seven FA Cup matches at St Mary’s (W5 D2), though were eliminated from one of those ties via a penalty shootout. Saints are looking to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in consecutive campaigns for the first time since 1904-05 & 1905-06.
● West Ham are winless in nine FA Cup away games against fellow Premier League sides (D3 L6), though have progressed twice via replays.
● Since joining Southampton in 2016-17, Nathan Redmond has been involved in more FA Cup goals than any other player for the club (six goals, two assists). These eight involvements have come in his last nine appearances in the competition.
● Jarrod Bowen has scored for West Ham in the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup this season – the last player to score in the first three (available) rounds of the competition for the Hammers in a season was Frank McAvennie in 1986-87.
Liverpool v Norwich City
8.15pm, Wednesday 2 March 2022
Anfield
Live on ITV
● Liverpool have already beaten Norwich three times in all competitions this season, twice in the Premier League and once in the League Cup – they’ve never beaten a team four times in a single season across league, FA Cup and League Cup.
● Liverpool and Norwich last met in the FA Cup back in 1989-90, when holders Liverpool beat the Canaries after a replay in round four – goals from Steve Nicol, John Barnes and Peter Beardsley securing a 3-1 win.
● This is only the second time under Jürgen Klopp Liverpool have reached round five of the FA Cup, also doing so in 2019-20 – a defeat to Chelsea. The Reds last reached the quarter-finals in 2014-15, before losing to Aston Villa in the semi-finals.
● Norwich City have been eliminated at the fifth round of the FA Cup in four of the last five seasons they’ve reached this stage, though did beat Spurs in 2019-20 most recently.
● Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino has been involved in three goals in his last three appearances in the FA Cup (one goal, two assists), more than he had been in his first eight in the competition (one goal, one assist).
● The only current Norwich player with a goal to his name against Liverpool for the Canaries is Teemu Pukki, who netted a consolation strike on the opening day of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign; however, the Finnish striker is yet to score in the FA Cup in six previous appearances.
Everton v Boreham Wood
8.15pm, Thursday 3 March 2022
Goodison Park
Live on ITV
● This will be Boreham Wood’s first ever competitive meeting with a top-flight side, whilst only one of the previous seven non-League sides to pit their wits against top-flight opposition at the round five stage (since 1925-26) of the FA Cup have progressed – Lincoln City beating Burnley in 2016-17.
● Since a 2-1 defeat to Swindon in the 1911-12 quarter-final, Everton have progressed from each of their last ten FA Cup ties against non-League opposition, though two of those did end up going to replays. This is the Toffee’s first such fixture since a 2-0 win over Tamworth at Goodison Park in January 2012.
● Everton have progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on 11 of the last 13 occasions they’ve reached the fifth round, including each of the last five. They were last eliminated at this stage of the competition in 2010-11 (0-1 vs Reading).
● Since the Football League was formed in 1888-89, Boreham Wood are the tenth team in FA Cup history to play in each of the first four rounds of the competition and win each match with a clean sheet, whilst they are the very first non-League club to achieve this feat (excluding any byes or unfulfilled fixtures).
● Everton boss Frank Lampard has progressed from ten of his 12 FA Cup ties as a manager, only failing to do so with Derby in round five in 2018-19 (v Brighton) and losing in the Final of the competition with Chelsea against Arsenal in 2019-20.
● Of sides left in the competition, only Luton and Chelsea (seven each) have had more different goalscorers in this season’s FA Cup than Boreham Wood (six).
Nottingham Forest v Huddersfield Town
7.30pm, Monday 7 March 2022
The City Ground
Live on ITV4
● Only one of the last 16 matches between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town in all competitions has ended level (seven wins for Forest, eight for Huddersfield), with both Championship matches this season being won by the away side.
● This will be just the second FA Cup tie between Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield after a round three tie in 1938-39, which the Yorkshire side won 3-0 away from home following a replay.
● This is just Nottingham Forest’s second fifth round tie in the last 17 FA Cup campaigns, after 2013-14. They’ve not reached the quarter-final of the competition since 1995-96.
● Huddersfield are playing in round five of the FA Cup for the first time since 2017-18; the Terriers have progressed from just one of their last ten ties at this stage, beating Ron Greenwood’s West Ham in February 1972.
● Nottingham Forest have won each of their last four FA Cup home games, last having a longer such run at the City Ground in the competition between January 1991 and January 1993 under Brian Clough (7).
● Josh Koroma has been involved in a goal in both of his FA Cup starts for Huddersfield, scoring against Burnley in round three and assisting their winner against Barnsley in round four.
