Manchester United and Chelsea edge through late on

Casemiro's header sent Manchester United through to a record-breaking 48th Emirates FA Cup quarter-final tie

Casemiro struck late to fire Manchester United through to the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final and set up a mouth-watering tie with fierce rivals Liverpool.

United left it late to advance past Nottingham Forest while Liverpool coasted past Southampton to set up a scintillating Cup renewal between the two storied clubs. 

In the game of the night, Chelsea edged Leeds in a five-goal thriller while Wolves booked their spot in the last eight with a nervy 1-0 win over Brighton at Molineux. 

Casemiro strikes at the death

Casemiro proved an unlikely hero late on as Manchester United snuck past Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. 

Antony returned to the United starting line-up for the first time since scoring in the Fourth Round win over Newport County and he nearly gave the visitors an early lead but his first-time shot cannoned of the crossbar. 

Forest’s frontmen looked lively but it was United who were fashioning the best chances, with Marcus Rashford slashing over just inside the box at the end of a well-worked move. 

Forest finished the half stronger but Neco Williams and Taiwo Awoniyi both blazed over as it finished all square at the break. 

The hosts improved after the break, forcing Andre Onana into a flurry of last-ditch stops. 

Both sides were lacking in potency and the game looked to be heading to extra time before Casemiro met Bruno Fernandes’ smart free-kick in the 89th minute to send the visitors through. 

Danns at the double for Liverpool

Jayden Danns scored twice as a youthful Liverpool side saw off spirited Southampton 3-0 at Anfield. 

Southampton were left to rue several missed chances throughout, two of which came inside the opening seven minutes. 

Kamaldeen Sulemana curled an effort off the base of the post before Sekou Mara, who also saw an early effort ruled out for offside, was denied by Sunday’s Wembley hero Caoimhín Kelleher. 

Southampton looked totally unfazed at Anfield and continued to enjoy the better openings. Sulemana was particularly impressive but after slaloming between two Liverpool defenders he could only find the gloves of Kelleher. 

With half-time looming, Lewis Koumas edged Liverpool in front. The son of former Wales international Jason cut inside and fired into the bottom corner via a deflection off Jan Bednarek. 

Kelleher was then called into action at the start of the second half, stretching to keep the Reds ahead after another shot from Sulemana. 

But the evening belonged to Danns who scored twice after coming on as a second-half sub. 

The first came after a brilliant reverse pass from Harvey Elliott on 73 minutes before the 18-year-old fired in a rebound two minutes from time to keep Liverpool on course for a domestic cup double. 

Gallagher rescues Chelsea

Conor Gallagher scored in the 90th minute as Chelsea recovered from their Carabao Cup heartache to beat Leeds 3-2 in a breathless encounter at Stamford Bridge. 

Leeds had earlier taken a shock lead when Chelsea played themselves into trouble. A risky pass from Axel Disasi was intercepted and Jaidon Anthony laid off to Mateo Joseph who lashed in from close range. 

It took just seven minutes for Chelsea to produce a response – Nicholas Jackson pulled the hosts level, stroking the ball through Illan Meslier‘s legs from an acute angle. 

The finish for Chelsea's second was even better as Mykhailo Mudryk raced onto a Raheem Sterling pull back to turn past Meslier for his first goal of 2024. 

Leeds enjoyed a lot of the ball in the second half and levelled when Jaidon Anthony's pinpoint cross arrived perfectly onto Joseph’s head on the hour mark.

But it was substitute Gallagher who spared Chelsea's blushes as he swivelled and swept past Meslier with just five seconds of the 90 remaining, setting up a rerun of the 2021 final against Leicester City in the last eight. 

Wolves cling on after early Lemina strike

Mario Lemina scored the only goal of the game as Wolves beat Brighton in an all-Premier League affair.  

The home side opened the scoring after just two minutes when midfielder Lemina claimed his first FA Cup goal. 

Far from a classic, the midfielder reacted quickest to an error from Jason Steele, sliding in at the back post after the Seagulls keeper spilt a Jeanricner Bellegarde cross. 

That was how it remained at half time but Brighton could easily have levelled through Facundo Buonanotte. Pervis Estupinan picked out the unmarked Argentine but he conspired to miss the target from all of six yards. 

Brighton gave everything they had in a bid to keep their FA Cup dreams and ‘keeper Steele was sent forward late on but it proved in vain as Wolves held on for a home tie with Championship side Coventry.

In Tuesday night's action Erling Haaland scored five as holders Manchester City coasted to a 6-2 victory over Luton Town.

In the process, Haaland became the first player to score five or more goals in an FA Cup match for a top-flight club since George Best in 1970, with the first four laid on by Kevin de Bruyne.

Elsewhere, Leicester City required extra time to beat Bournemouth, while Newcastle United knocked out Blackburn Rovers in a dramatic penalty shoot-out. 

And in the opening tie of the Fifth Round, Ellis Simms' hat-trick led Coventry City ended Maidstone United's fairytale run with in a 5-0 rout at the Ricoh Arena.
