Fulham stun holders Manchester United on penalties to join Brighton in quarter-finals

Calvin Bassey scored on his first appearance in the Emirates FA Cup

Bernd Leno saved back-to-back penalties as Fulham knocked out out Emirates FA Cup holders Manchester United in a penalty shootout at Old Trafford.

The goalkeeper denied Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee after the teams drew 1-1 over 120 minutes.

Calvin Bassey had put Fulham a goal up shortly before half time, only for Bruno Fernandes to equalise for United in the second half.

Neither team managed a winner in extra-time, with Leno the hero from the spot as he saved successive penalties to send Fulham into the quarter-finals.

The first half was a tight affair, with neither side able to create many clear cut chances.

Just before half time, though, Fulham took the lead. Andreas Pereira’s corner was nodded on by Rodrigo Muniz, with Bassey the quickest to react to head past Andre Onana.

Having taken the lead, Fulham looked the better team early in the second half, threatening regularly and Emile Smith Rowe forced a good save out of Onana to prevent a second.

The holders were in danger of going out, but as so often, when they needed a goal, Bruno stepped up. The skipper struck Diogo Dalot’s cross home first time with his left foot, guiding it past Leno in the Fulham goal.

That sparked United into life, but Fulham almost went back in front with Onana again down well to deny Smith Rowe.

In stoppage time, it was the home side who came desperately close to a winner, 17-year-old Chido Obi twice coming close, either side of a great save from Leno to deny Alejandro Garnacho when he was through.

Both teams had chances in extra-time, Onana doing well to deny Ryan Sessegnon after Leno had done the same to Obi.

Earlier in the day, Danny Welbeck’s goal five minutes from the end of extra time sent Brighton & Hove Albion through as they won 2-1 against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring from the spot for Newcastle before Yankuba Minteh equalised against his former team.

Both teams were reduced to ten men in the second half, Anthony Gordon and then Tariq Lamptey dismissed before Fabian Schar had a late winner ruled out for offside.

And in the extra 30 minutes, it was Brighton who broke the hearts of the home fans when Welbeck was played in by Solly March and lifted the ball over the onrushing Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle almost opened the scoring after just two minutes, Isak picked out by a clever cross from Harvey Barnes but the Swede was unable to find the net with two attempts.

The home side were the more threatening but their opener came thanks to a Brighton error. Former Newcastle man Minteh was late chasing back on Tino Livramento and lunged just after the pass had gone, conceding a penalty as a result.

Isak was emphatic from the spot, smashing the ball into the top left corner past Bart Verbruggen.

Leading 1-0 after 22 minutes, Newcastle almost made it two just after the half-hour. Played in behind, Isak smashed an early first-time shot past Verbruggen, but had just strayed offside and the goal was chalked off.

Brighton had looked slick with the ball, particularly on the break, but lacked the cutting edge to turn that into goals.

That was until just before half time when Minteh and Joao Pedro exchanged passes, the latter with a beautiful through ball that Minteh slid past Dubravka to equalise, with the help of a slight deflection from Kieran Trippier as he chased back.

If Newcastle dominated the first half, Brighton were on top in the second, with Joao Pedro close to putting them in front with a smart shot that Dubravka did well to keep out.

Newcastle regrouped and could have gone back in front when Livramento put in a lovely cross that Joe Willock could not steer home.

However, with five minutes to go, they lost Gordon to a red card for a push to the face of Jan Paul van Hecke, with Isak going off injured in a double blow.

The man advantage lasted barely five minutes, with Lamptey picking up a second yellow card after stretching for a loose ball and catching Callum Wilson.

Newcastle almost took full advantage from the resulting free-kick, with Schar volleying home the ball into the box, but he had just drifted offside.

Dubravka then made a brilliant save to deny Diego Gomez early in extra-time as Brighton pushed for a second.

With five minutes remaining, Welbeck finished brilliantly over Dubravka just after Newcastle looked as though they had regained control of the game.

They had a final chance as Dan Burn found space in the box, but it was Brighton who held on to progress.

The draw for the quarter-final was made after the game at Old Trafford and can be seen here.
