Leighton Baines will miss England’s games against Republic of Ireland and Slovenia next month after undergoing surgery for an ongoing ankle complaint.
The Everton left-back will also sit out the club’s final games of the Premier League season – against West Ham and Tottenham – but is expected to be back when they return for pre-season training.
His manager Roberto Martinez revealed the news at his Thursday morning media briefing.
He said: "We had Leighton's ankle checked and he has had surgery. It was straight-forward and he will be out until the start of pre-season.
"We have found the solution [to the ankle problem]. His time out will now allow him to be refreshed."
Baines, who has played 41 times for club and country this season, was substituted after 74 minutes in the Toffees’ 2-0 home defeat against Sunderland on Saturday.
“He will come back stronger next season”

And Martinez revealed the injury is one that has been troubling the defender for several years.
"It had been a problem since 2012," he added.
"It doesn't affect you for a while and then you get a knock or bad movement and it flares up. It was difficult for him to play pain free.
"We want to make sure the ankle is in perfect condition and he will come back stronger next season."
England take on Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Sunday 7 June, before travelling to Slovenia for a Euro 2016 qualifier on 14 June.
