Hotshots Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy scored a goal apiece as England’s opening Euro 2016 warm-up match ended in a 2-1 victory over Turkey in Manchester.
Tottenham striker Kane opened the scoring early on only for Hakan Calhanoglu to restore parity just 10 minutes later.
Kane missed a penalty midway through the second half but Vardy netted the winner from close range with seven minutes remaining.
England 2-1 Turkey
International Match
Sunday 22 May 2016
City of Manchester Stadium
Turkey, ranked 13th in the world, qualified for the Euros ahead of Netherlands and this was their first defeat in 14 matches.
The Three Lions have two more matches before they travel to France. They welcome Australia to the Stadium of Light on Friday 27 May before signing off against Portugal at Wembley on Thursday 2 June.
This was England’s first home match away from Wembley for nine years and it was fitting that it was in Manchester, the city that hosted many home internationals the last time they went on the road.
With three Manchester United players missing due to their Emirates FA Cup-winning exploits and four Liverpool players still recovering from the Reds’ Europa League final defeat by Sevilla, Roy Hodgson was only able to name a 19-player squad for the Turkey match.
Arsenal playmaker Jack Wilshere made his first international appearance since he starred in the 3-2 win in Slovenia last June and he lined up in midfield alongside Tottenham duo Eric Dier and Dele Alli, with frontman Kane flanked by Raheem Sterling and Vardy.
And the Three Lions came flying out of the blocks.
In just the third minute Sterling came in-field to find Alli and the former MK Dons star fed club-mate Kane who calmly slotted home from inside the box, even though TV replays showed he was in an offside position. It was Kane’s 32nd goal of the season for club and country.
Kyle Walker, one of five Spurs players in the starting line-up, had to be vigilant to prevent Fatih Terim’s side from equalising almost immediately as a Turkey throw-in found its way to Ozan Tufan and the right-back slid in to block the seemingly goalbound shot.
But Turkey were level just before the quarter-hour mark – with their first-ever goal against England.
Oguzhan Ozyakup, who won the 2009 FA Youth Cup alongside Wilshere at Arsenal, played a neat ball inside Danny Rose to Volkan Sen, who squared for Calhanoglu to slide a low shot into the far corner.
Both sides played some neat stuff throughout the remainder of the first half but neither goalkeeper was overly tested after that lively opening. Gokhan Gonul forced Joe Hart to get down smartly at his near post before Dier came close to repeating his memorable winner against Germany in Berlin when he headed Wilshere’s corner just wide of the near post.
Early in the second half, just after the offside flag had denied Kane a second, Cenk Tosun swivelled and shot wide of Hart’s left-hand upright to raise the volume among the Turkey fans inside the stadium. Caner Erkin then headed a corner wide much in the same way Dier did in the first half.
Neither side were able to build any momentum after the break although Kane was handed a glorious chance to double his and England’s tally from 12 yards.
Vardy outpaced Mehmet Topal to lead a counter-attack down the inside left channel. The Turkey captain caught up with Vardy but bundled him over inside the box and referee Deniz Aytekin pointed to the spot.
Kane stepped up confidently but hooked his penalty wide.
However, his blushes were spared by his Leicester City counterpart with just seven minutes remaining.
Henderson’s corner was headed goalwards by captain Gary Cahill. Volkan parried the ball away but was hindered by Ismail Koybasi on the line and Vardy smashed home the rebound from a tight angle.
And Hart ensured the first of England’s three warm-up matches ended in victory by saving well from Olcay Sahan in added time.
England open their Euro 2016 Finals campaign against Russia on Saturday 11 June in Marseille.
